Worship Arts

Long Memorial United Methodist Church is a place where God’s creative Spirit surrounds us with beauty.  Each week we meet in our Chapel and our Main Sanctuary to celebrate the connection between God’s and our own creative spirit.  Together we praise God, and learn, and grow through all of the worship arts.

Chancel Choir 

The Chancel Choir has the responsibility for helping to lead the 11:00 a.m. worship service throughout the year.  Each Sunday, dedicated choristers offer an anthem, a call to prayer and a benediction.  Music selection varies widely in style from classical to traditional to old-time gospel to contemporary praise.  Two major choral works are presented each year with orchestra.  The Chancel Choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings at 7:00-8:15 p.m. and on Sunday mornings at 10:35-11:00 a.m. in the Choir Room on the 2nd Floor.  The choir takes Wednesdays off during summer.  Child care is provided as needed during Wednesday evening rehearsals.  The ability to read music is not a requirement.

 Hand Bell Choir

The Hand Bell Choir is dedicated to glorifying God through the ancient art of bell ringing.  They provide music for the 11:00 a.m. worship service and other special worship services periodically throughout the year.  Rehearsals are held on Wednesday evenings at 6:00-6:45 p.m. in the Main Sanctuary Annex.  Beginners are welcome – the only requirement is the ability to count!

Children’s Choir

On Sundays year round just before Sunday School, Children’s Choir practice is held at 9:45-10:00 a.m. in the Main Sanctuary.  All children ages 3½ through 5th grade are welcome.  During rehearsal the children learn music concepts of rhythm and pitch, and apply them to singing for the purpose of worship.  The sacred music they learn covers every style from traditional to “rap.”  Music selections and singing groups are tailored to the ages represented.  The Children’s Choir sings during the 11:00 a.m. worship service several times each year.  Occasionally, we add older children to the group for a special musical presentation.

Liturgical Dance

Long Memorial is blessed to have a dedicated group of middle-school through high-school age youth who interpret, through modern dance, the music presented by the Chancel Choir.  Directed by Ashley Bailey, they are always an inspiring part of our Christmas and Easter services as well as other special services throughout the year.  Rehearsals are scheduled occasionally as needed and costumes are provided.

Drama

Long Memorial is gifted by many excellent actors and actresses and interpretive readers.  These ministers in drama currently present narration, dramatic readings, and special liturgies throughout the year.  We look forward to expanding their impact on our worship as they make more frequent appearances in the coming year.
